The Watcher by Omer Lee Reed

The snow fell softly all the night
And slowly all the world went white
So softly did the snowflakes fall,
I slept and heard them not at all.
When I awoke, the land lay still
and white above my window sill.
The smoke hung slim and straight and high
Between the chimneys and the sky.
No footsteps fell upon the street.
The silence stood on silent feet.

Long winter nights when I lie curled
Asleep -- asleep -- the watching world
In snowy stillness softly slips
Her whitest finger to her lips --
Sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh-sh !
